Bed bugs have an oval broad, flat body and a short broad head. Adult bed bugs, after feeding, will swell slightly in size and darken to a reddish color. The nymphs are shaped like the adults but are yellowish or white in color. Bed bug eggs are white and are about 1 mm long and are almost impossible to see on most surfaces. The female bed bug may lay 200 to 500 eggs in her lifetime, at a rate of about two to five per day. Bed bug eggs have a sticky coating and are deposited in cracks and crevices or any hidden area.
These eggs usually hatch anytime between six to seventeen days. After taking at least one blood meal, the nymph molts, and will go through five stages called instars before becoming a mature adult. To grow from an egg to an adult bed bug, it will take roughly one month. Did you know bed bugs can live over twelve months without feeding?
